There are many different alternatives to pork products for breakfast, whether you are trying to keep kosher or if you are just interested in trying an alternative to bacon and pork sausage. Corned beef and beef bacon are two delicious breakfast options with interesting histories and origins.
Beef bacon used to be found primarily at Jewish and Muslim butchers. Neither Jews or Muslims consume pork products. In the Middle East, both cuts from lamb and beef are considered bacon. In the United States, the USDA only considers cuts of swine belly as bacon. These days, beef bacon is starting to become trendier. It is starting to be featured in more mainstream recipes and on cooking blogs. People are eager to try it out of curiosity, rather than for religious reasons.
These days though, more stores, particularly natural or health oriented grocery stores, are carrying beef bacon alongside traditional bacon. A lot of this bacon is portrayed as being a healthy alternative to pork if the beef is grass fed. It also has less fat than pork bacon, so it's better for your heart. Corned beef is an Irish-American tradition that has roots that can be traced back to New York City. Just like bacon, corned beef is seasoned with spices and cured with brine. Corned beef is a different cut of meat than bacon beef. Pork bacon was the breakfast meat of choice in the homeland but it wasn't as readily available in America. Irish immigrants often lived in areas with other immigrants, many of them Jewish, who sold beef rather than pork products in their delis. Traditionally, the Irish are known for their consumption of potatoes, but cabbage was cheaper and easier to get in the new land, so the dish of corned beef and cabbage was born.
The Reuben sandwich made with corned beef, swiss cheese, and thousand island dressing on rye bread, also has its origins in New York City. However, corned beef is just as delicious at breakfast as it is with cabbage or in Reuben sandwiches. Corned beef or corned beef hash are delicious with eggs and other savory breakfast items. Even reubens can be made into a breakfast sandwich with the addition of a fried egg either in the sandwich or on top.
